Money Saving Tips for Summer

Summer is upon us! Here are some tips for keeping those utility bills down in the summer time:

1. Set your thermostat at 78 degrees or higher and dress appropriately. Keep heat-generating appliances away from the thermostat.

2. Turn the air off when you are going to be gone for several hours. According to Energy Conservation Programs, it takes less energy to re-cool a home when you return than it does to keep it cool while you are gone.

3. Use fans as much as possible. Fans use much less electricity than an air conditioner.

4. Turn ceiling fans to the counter-clockwise setting to push air down and keep rooms cool.

5. Close shades during the day to reduce solar heat. White blinds, shades and curtains reflect the sunlight but dark colors absorb it.

6. On cool evenings, turn the air off and open some windows.

7. Make sure your home is properly insulated.

8. Air conditioners work more efficiently when they are shaded and not blocked.

9. During the hottest part of the day, minimize the use of appliances that generate heat: dryers, ovens, etc.

What other "summer" tips do you know of?

  1. Great advice. Another tip is to keep the curtains closed during the day, to block the heat of the sun from coming into the house and open the house up once the outside temperature is lower than the inside temperature.

  2. The cost of running air-con is a big expenditure during summer.

  3. I Need to show this to my husband, he always says it takes more energy to restart the air than to keep in going all day. Maybe now we will save some money

  4. You know, I've heard people say that, too. It actually surprised me when I found this nugget of info. I wonder if it used to be true with some of the first air conditioning units.....but not true anymore as everything is more efficient now. Don't know for sure.....just thinking out-loud.
