Friday's Frugal Food

It's Friday.....that means Frugal Food Day here at Household Cents!

Does your family love pizza?  Mine sure does.  But store-bought frozen pizzas are so unhealthy and ordering out for pizza can get really expensive.  So what's a mom to do?

We make our own pizza.  It's yummy, healthy and cheap!

Here is a recipe for the pizza crust:

2 1/2 - 2 3/4 Cups flour
1 package active dry yeast (or 2 1/4 teaspoon)
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup warm water (around 125 degrees is good)
1 Tablespoon oil (I like to use olive oil)
1 teaspoon sugar

Combine 2 1/2 cups flour, yeast and salt in a large bowl.  In a smaller bowl, mix the warm water, olive oil and sugar.
Add the water mixture to the flour mixture.  Stir and form a soft dough.
Knead on a floured surface for a good five minutes.  (My kids LOVE to do the kneading.)
Form the dough into a ball and put it in an oiled bowl.  Cover with a towel or plastic wrap and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size.  That could take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour depending on the time of year and warmth of your house.
Punch down the dough (another step I let the kids do).  Let the dough "rest" for 10 minutes.
Then squish the dough out onto a cookie sheet or baking platter with your hands.  I can get it to fit my 12x15 rectangle shaped stoneware or my 15 inch round stoneware.

Then pour on a container of pizza or spaghetti sauce (or your homemade sauce from the tomatoes in your garden), some shredded mozzarella cheese and whatever other toppings you like (pepperoni, sausage, peppers, onions, mushrooms, etc).  Bake at 450 degrees F for about 15 minutes.

Yummy!!!!

  10. Mmm.... homemade pizza is the best! I don't really even like carry-out pizza after getting so used to my whole wheat crust and homemade sauce. I'm going to be sad when the sauce stash in my freezer runs out.
